Watch Stephen Colbert Roast Gwyneth Paltrow’s and Reese Witherspoon’s Lifestyle Brands

“As a celebrity, my life is filled with luxury items, hand-selected jewelry, and the illusion of free time.”

or those who weren’t convinced that Stephen Colbert would make a worthy Late Show successor to David Letterman, look no further than the above segment from Thursday night’s show, during which Colbert surgically lets the self-serious air out of the lifestyle brands launched by Gwyneth Paltrow, Reese Witherspoon, and Blake Lively in recent years.

While some comedians could have easily just mocked Goop, Draper James, and Preserve, Colbert flips his skewering of the subject on its ear by introducing his own lifestyle brand—a clever way to lampoon celebrity lifestyle brands at his own expense. (Toeing this line between making a good joke without burning the A-list actresses he’ll likely be inviting to the Ed Sullivan Theater is no easy feat in talk-show diplomacy!)
“People think of me as a talk-show host,” Colbert announces, “but my real passion, ever since I was a child, is being a brand. That’s why every time my parents said my name, I would sue them for trademark infringement.
“As a celebrity, my life is filled with luxury items, hand-selected jewelry, and the illusion of free time,” the comedian continues, before explaining the merchandise his lifestyle brand will offer, like coasters (“only $175 for each set of one”) and tie stands (“painstakingly created out of locally crafted hat stands”).
Before telling viewers to “treat you to some me,” Colbert issues the most scathing criticism of celebrities trying to make a buck off of their fans. But he does so with a smile and self-effacing humor: “It’s a haven for conversations,” Colbert says of his Web site. “Conversations that begin with a warm handshake between equals and end with the three-digit code on the back of your credit card.”
